Part 6: The setting aside of the former regulation

(Content of this section: The impact on our daily religious life of having a high priest who is not of the Levitical priesthood.)

Jesus is priest according to the order of Melchizedek. Does this in any way have a direct impact on our daily religious walk? Yes, much in every way! And here’s why. The Letter to the Hebrews has this disclosure of what has taken place,

For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law.

Hebrews 7:12 - NKJV

And to this the writer adds,

The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.

Hebrews 7:18-19 - NIV

About Hebrews 7:12 the Expositor's Greek Testament comments, “This change of priesthood being made, as it is now being made, a change of the law is also being made. The connection is: what need was there for a new priesthood? It must have been a crying need, for to change the priesthood is to change all. It means nothing short of revolution.”

The Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges informs, "The Law and the Priesthood were so inextricably united that the Priesthood could not be altered without disintegrating the whole complex structure of the Law." There we have it. The altering of the Priesthood triggered a disintegrating of the complex structure of the Law that went with it.

We see then that with the change of priesthood there is necessitated a change of the law. The former regulation - that is, the law associated with the Levitical priesthood that is sometimes given the name “the Levitical Law” or otherwise known as “the Mosaic Law” - is set aside. It is rendered obsolete. In place of it we are told, “a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.” (Take a moment to read also Hebrews 8:13.)
