What had Jesus been to them? Well, really everything but for a moment let's look at how He had been their Teacher. As their teacher He had spoken words that were spirit and life. His teaching had given them knowledge of the Truth to set them free. His words had revealed the Father to them. Now He promised the coming of the Holy Spirit to be the Teacher.

These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

John 14:25-26 - KJV

Jesus had been speaking to them teaching them many things for over three years and now the Holy Spirit was going to be coming to carry on teaching them. As believers, in receiving the Holy Spirit, we are receiving the Teacher and Revealer of the things of God. Paul writes,

We have received...the Spirit who is from God: that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

1 Corinthians 2:12 - NKJV

God is eager for us to know about the things He has freely given to us. The Holy Spirit reveals these things of God to us. Jesus said,

I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will guide you into all Truth...He will glorify me, for He will take of what is mine and declare it to you.

John 16:12-14 - KJV
