Part 17: Jesus' lesson in swordsmanship

(This is part 17 of 19 parts in this class)

We see Jesus using this sword when the devil attacked Him at the beginning of His earthly ministry. The account of this confrontation is the best place in scripture for you to learn how to wield the sword of the spirit. Matthew tells us,

The devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, 'All these thngs I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.' Then Jesus said to him, 'Away with you, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.' Then the devil left Him.

Matthew 4:8-11 - NKJV

The devil left! Jesus declared,

"It is written..." and the devil turned to leave! He wasn't going to risk any further confrontation with the sword of the spirit being used against him. Jesus put the devil to flight by speaking the word. Jesus used the sword of the spirit against the devil. Paul exhorts us,Take...the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:17 - NKJV

The sword of the spirit is for putting to flight the devil. It is not a duelling weapon. It is not for engaging the devil in combat. It is a short sword more accurately called a dirk. It is for finishing an adversary off with. You thrust and pierce the devil with it. This short sword is the sword of the spirit and it is the word of God.
