Part 12: A Covenant of Gift

(Content of this section: The form and character of the New Covenant)

Quoting the prophetic word given in Jeremiah, the writer of the Letter to the Hebrews announces the form and character of the New Covenant,

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Hebrews 8:10 - NKJV

(Content of this section: Jesus has done all that is needed for New Covenant to endure)

This is it! This is the statement of the New Covenant. How wonderfully straightforward that is! It's just two lines, both telling us what God is going to do with nothing asked of us in the way of maintaining the enduring character of the covenant. In fact, we come to discover that Jesus has done all that is needed for it to endure. Both the agreement side of the covenant and the dispensation side of the covenant are both to be according to the keeping power of God. God brings us into a relationship with Himself, “I will be their God, and they shall be My people” and God maintains us as His people, “I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts.”

In his book “The Way into the Holiest” F B Meyer writes, “If we are ever to be His people, people for His own possession then it can only result from the operation of His gracious Spirit, who keeps us, as the sun restrains the planets from dashing off into space to become wandering stars.”

(Content of this section: The New Covenant is a covenant of gift.)

The New Covenant is a covenant of gift. It is not based on a treaty as the Old Covenant was but on a gift - the covenant is granted to us through Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul declares this in his letter to the Ephesians,

At that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

Ephesians 2:12-13 - NKJV
