How to walk in health

God wants His people to be well. This has always been His desire. We hear this expressed so well in God's words of exhortation and promises spoken to Moses,

You shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you.

Exodus 23:25 - NKJV

Both in the Old Testament and in the New Testament God's prophets have passed on God's promises of health to His people. They have also given us God's counsel on how to walk in this provision of health. A good example of this is found in Proverbs,

My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.

Proverbs 4:20 - 22 - NKJV

The struggle most Bible-believing Christians have is not about whether God is able to heal them but about whether God is willing to heal them. You hear God's promises of healing and you hear testimonies of God healing others but you still get challenged by the question, "Is He willing to do it for me?"

The story of the leper meeting Jesus found in Matthew chapter 8 should clear this up for you. The leper was convinced Jesus could heal him what he needed to hear was whether Jesus was willing to heal him. Jesus gave him that assurance. Since God in Jesus was willing to heal the leper be assured He is willing to heal you. Here's how the conversation went,

Behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean." Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be cleansed." Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

Matthew 8:2 - 3 - NKJV

In the Old Testament era God's people could walk in health through living in obedient service and by the ministry of healing by His prophet's. In the New Testament era we can walk in health because by Jesus' stripes we were healed. Health is God's gift to us through His Son Jesus Christ. We are the healed. We are the redeemed. 1 Pet.2:24

However, even though this is so, you may still find sickness coming against you. Even though divine health is yours to enjoy, yet you have an adversary who would like to rob you of that gift. So this is a call to arms. You are going to have to be spiritually proactive in you want to live in health. At times you are going to have to vigorously defend your health.

Here is a key promise from scripture on which to make your stand for health,

He (Christ) was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.

Isaiaih 53:5 - NKJV

Below is an extensive list with supporting scriptures of what it takes to walk in divine health.

1) It takes having a revelation from God's Word of Christ's provision of health. This provision flows out from the substitutionary sacrifice Jesus made by offering up Himself on the Cross. The wonder of this provision is revealed to the human heart by the Holy Spirit.

Note: there is a difference between head knowledge and revelation. Revelation is an intimation or disclosure of the knowledge of God by the Holy Spirit. It usually comes as you reflect on God's Word in the presence of the Holy Spirit. See Eph.1:18-20, Joh.6:69, Isa.53:1.

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Galatians 3:13 - 14 - NKJV

2) It takes having absolute confidence in the precious promises God has given through the apostles and prophets, particularly those promises related to health and healing.

Note: absolute confidence, or secure faith, in God's promises increases as one ponders God's Word allowing the Holy Spirit to speak the words of the scriptures to the heart. See Rom.10:17.

God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

Numbers 23:19 - NKJV

3) It takes attending diligently to God's Word, seeking out God's sayings and hiding away His words in your heart. You have to feed on God's word. See Deut.8:3b.

My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.

Proverbs 4:20 - 22 - NKJV

4) It takes renewing your mind, that is transforming your thinking, so you give place to God's utterances about matters in your life rather than man's. See Isa.55:7 - 8.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:2 - NKJV

5) It takes your tongue being used to speak words of health and life instead of words of woe and disaster. This means your tongue has to be tamed so that a confession in line with God's Word becomes the norm in your life. See James 3:10 - 12,

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 18:21 - NKJV

6) It takes adopting a lifestyle of praise and rejoicing. See Neh.8:10b, Ja.1:2-4, Phil.4:4.

A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.

Proverbs 17:22 - NKJV

7) It takes adopting a lifestyle of casting cares not carrying them. You are to become so diligent in this that anxiety and worry find no more than the occasional fleeting moment in you.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6 - 7 - NKJV

8) It takes a refusal to fear. You have to let the love of God cast out fear. You have to resist fear. The Spirit of power, of love and a sound mind has to have full sway in you. See Job 3:25 and note its warning.

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7 - NKJV

9) It takes adopting a lifestyle of living in God's strength and power. See Eph.6:10.

Those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31 - NKJV

10) It takes becoming established in the gift of righteousness that is granted to us in Christ Jesus. This means to be ever conscious in heart and soul that God has bestowed upon you this gift and that you now exist in a continues relationship with God because of that gift.See Isa.54:14 - 15.

The work of righteousness will be peace, And the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.

Isaiah 30:17 - NKJV

11) It takes adopting a lifestyle of walking by faith and not by sight. See 2 Cor.5:7, Heb.11:1.

The just shall live by his faith.

Habakkuk 2:4 - NKJV

12) It takes realising that as a Christian you have eternal life and that this life is the very the life of God. It is in you and you can lay hold of it. See Joh.3:36

I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

John 10:10 - NKJV

13) It takes the recognition and expectation of the "quickening" (revitalisation) of your mortal body by the Holy Spirit.

If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Romans 8:11 - NKJV

14) It takes diligently having regular times of refreshing in the presence of the Lord.

You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 16:11 - NKJV

15) It takes having a vibrant prayer life, that is a prayer life whose essence is worship and devotion with the implication that you can ask in faith without wavering.

Let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord.

James 1:6 - 7 - NKJV

16) It takes pleading the blood in the face of the devil's accusations.

They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.

Revelation 12:11 - NKJV

17) It takes commitment to opposing the devil on the basis of the Word's proclamations and promises when he attacks your health. See Eph.6:10-19.

Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

James 4:7 - NKJV

In summary, you need a body you look after (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), a soul you hold in God's peace (Philippians 4:6-7), and a spirit you nourish with God's word (Deuteronomy 8:3).
